Thank you for all your prayers! We took a three day mini vacation to Baltimore to check out Kennedy Krieger's outpatient program. We were defiantly impressed! The staff really filled us with hope, by making Kyle feel that nothing was impossible. Their gym was amazing as well as the therapists. It seems like it would be a program that would push K to the max! They would love to see Kyle enter their program for a two week period, five days a week for 6 hours a day. They will help him come up with an agressive program to do at home. After that two week period, he would go down every couple of months for a tune up! Keep praying for God's direction and timing!

We also had a great time playing at the Inner Harbor! We ate great seafood and had a blast at the aquarium. We were also excited that the hotel was very accessible.

Thank you all for your prayers and excitement!

Kyle & Brittany Hoffhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15205899398333956069noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-760369417219170722.post-81789516040756396672009-07-26T17:13:00.002-04:002009-07-26T17:43:30.946-04:00Baltimore Update!I have my 'evaluation' on August 6th! It is located in Baltimore, MD in a brand new wing of the Kennedy Krieger Institute. They are really involved in curing SCI and promoting nerve regeneration through Research Restoration Recovery. They use Activity Based Restoration Therapy techniques to "remind" the spinal cord of the movement and hopefully be able move again. They use alot of E-stim, aquatherapy, and the standing frame. My favorite things ...

"For many years, conventional wisdom held that most improvement from spinal cord injuries occurred in the first six months of recovery, and that improvement was impossible after two years. "Rehabilitation" focused mostly on teaching patients how to compensate for injuries thought to be irreversible. Conventional wisdom was wrong. The International Center for Spinal Cord Injury (ICSCI) at Kennedy Krieger was founded on the philosophy that individuals with paralysis can always hope for recovery of sensation, function, mobility and independence, even many months or years after their injuries." - from their website ....

Here's how it works: we would go there for a minimum of 3 weeks 4-5 days a week, they would develop a Home Program (for our new house) and help get the equipment approved. Every couple of months we would go back for a refresher. I am really excited and hope I get accepted! The Inner Harbor and crabcakes are an added bonus!

http://www.spinalcordrecovery.org/index.jsp their website - the videos are awesome and give me hope!!

The story of patient Brian Keefer and his experience in the new aquatic therapy center.
http://www.foxbaltimore.com/newsroom/features/cover_story/videos/vid_478.shtml
*Note: 4-5 second wait as the video loads

The grand opening celebration of their new outpatient center and interviews
http://wjz.com/local/kennedy.krieger.spinal.2.1022626.html
*Note: video will appear top right with play icon superimposed

Pray that I get in!

I hope my first "solo" post is as good as Britt'sKyle & Brittany Hoffhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15205899398333956069noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-760369417219170722.post-45652996952048646632009-05-01T14:00:00.005-04:002009-05-01T15:00:22.411-04:00New Pool Tricks!

This video was taken of K in the pool at therapy. K has been working on balance and using his trunk muscles. He has also been practicing rolling side to side and was unable to until recently. Let's see, what have we been up to ....

* We're still waiting to here from the insurance company about the house. PLEASE pray for patience! We are blessed to be home, but are excited for a new adventure.

* K is working out hard and really gaining muscle! Watch out Arnold! He is still doing therapy four days a week, including aqua therapy. He is now doing two hours of physical therapy and doing occupational things independently.

* K volunteered at the end of March at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. He was asked by a P.T student at Good Shepherd to come in for a lab that was about wheelchair evaluations. The students appreciated Kyle coming in and giving advice as a patient on how to properly order a wheelchair and therapy/life in general. He loves volunteering and hopes more opportunities arise. I teasingly call him the "lab rat".

* We are excited about the warmer weather! Even though we are fans of winter, we are ready to "play" outside.

*We met with the Neurosurgeon who did K's neck surgery. For Kyle, it was like meeting him for the first time, since he was so out of it in the hospital. We were surprised that him and his colleagues remembered us so well. Kyle's injury really stuck out to them. He was pleased that K's neck looks great and excited about his progress. It was interesting looking at the MRI from when he first got hurt. We never knew that the vertebrae that damaged his spinal cord was split in a perfect cross!

*B joined the gym to keep up with "the hulk", and is helping her mom sell her amazing art work and craft/art shows.

That's about all for now, but we will try to be better post-ers :)Kyle & Brittany Hoffhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15205899398333956069noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-760369417219170722.post-57864041503332637832009-02-27T12:26:00.003-05:002009-02-27T12:39:42.851-05:00Little Blessings!

We had the honor in the beginning of the month to babysit our cousin Morgan! We appreciated the opportunity to take care of her, because it gave us an idea of what a little addition to our family would be like. (No, don't get any ideas... we aren't trying yet!) It was great to see how Kyle was able to interact with her. She has such a sweet personality and brought us lots of smiles! She was fascinated with the lights on his wheelchair and was in awe when he spun around in circles! We loved having this little joy visit! We have been busy enjoying time with family and friends. Kyle still goes to therapy four times a week, one of those being aqua therapy. We are amazed at how much better Kyle's balance has gotten since he started in the pool. There is a bench under the water that they sit him on, and he has to try and keep his balance. He's up to to 10+ minutes! He really likes the workout, and how it loosens up his muscles. The weights on his ankles are to keep his legs from floating up. We also felt that we were treading water spiritually. We know that God has it in control, but it's easier to worry and to want to do things in our own time. We decided to crack open the Bible for some guidance. We read 1 Kings 5:1-5 and the moral of the story is that we don't need our dreams fulfilled today, but concentrate on how God has carried us through the battles. We feel blessed that we have been taken care of the whole way, and that another living situation is even possible. We know that God has even better blessings coming our way in His time, not ours. It was amazing to see how once we prayed and read the Bible that God placed people and encouraging words everywhere we went. Keep praying that we would be able to bond together as a couple spiritually so that we can realize the things that God has planned for.

"Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don't get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. The e-stim uses electric to replace the signal from your spinal cord. You attach certain electrodes to different muscle groups to strengthen the movement. It is used to strengthen muscles and for some patients it's used for pain management. Kyle used e-stim on his shoulders at Magee. It not only relieved the pain, but helped put his shoulder back in the joint. We are thankful that Kyle doesn't have any more pain and is working on the strengthening part of it. He's even becoming some what of an inventor! He used nuts and bolts to add weight to his wrist to help get them stronger.

Kyle & Brittany Hoffhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15205899398333956069noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-760369417219170722.post-78448184998853352562008-12-16T20:14:00.003-05:002008-12-16T20:35:35.622-05:00Progress Report :) Here is a picture of Kyle eating a rice krispie treat! We had a surprise party for him at Bensi Restaurant with a few other couples on Friday. Kyle had no idea! It was great! He thought his b-day surprise was going to be on his actual birthday which was Saturday the 13th. We did however venture out to Bethlehem on Saturday, thinking it would be fun to walk around the "Christmas City". We found that it was not very accessible and the places that were accessible probably would have been fine had it not have been the Christmas season. We decided to leave the crazy crowds and have dinner somewhere else. Altogether it was great to celebrate Kyle's life. His Birthday, December 13th, is also the one year anniversary of getting out of the hospital and going to Magee. It marks the day of great change! Looking back this time last year, we remember that Kyle was being weaned off his trach, eating pureed foods and sitting up in a wheelchair. It's amazing to think that he is tube free and zooming here and there in his wheelchair. We are so blessed to still have the real Kyle despite the tragedy that he went through!

"The Lord's loyal kindness never ceases; his compassions never end. It is good to wait patiently for deliverance from the Lord." -Lamentations 3:22-26Kyle & Brittany Hoffhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15205899398333956069noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-760369417219170722.post-51803607303823060132008-12-07T14:09:00.004-05:002008-12-07T14:20:52.006-05:00Jeff DunhamFriday Kyle and I went to see the ventriloquist Jeff Dunham. We decided to go all out this year, giving us a grand total of three thanksgivings! The festivities began on Wednesday with Britt's family. We had them over for dinner and brace yourselves......I made a turkey! That's right a 15 pounder! Kyle found it amusing that although the turkey was amazing when it was done, the pre turkey prep was enough to send me on a meat hiatus for the rest of the year! Pulling out the guts nearly sent me over the edge! Despite the gross turkey parts, our first hosting of thanksgiving went well. We enjoyed spending time with my family. Our next stop was at Kyle's grandparents on Thursday. We always love going there and visiting with the Hoff family. We appreciate the accessibility of their home since it isn't always easy fitting everywhere! Kyle was looking forward to Mom-Mom's food for a long time! Our third thanksgiving was spent with Laura, Mark, Meg & Troy. We decided to spice it up a little and go bowling! Kyle was able to bowl using a ramp to push the ball down the lane. Kyle loves the challenge of trying to beat everyone! We were happy to do something untraditional with his family. We had a great time chatting at dinner and can't wait to do it again next year! There is certainly a lot to be thankful for this year, especially for the support of family and friends!Kyle & Brittany Hoffhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15205899398333956069noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-760369417219170722.post-64928842796432104022008-11-19T19:50:00.002-05:002008-11-19T20:05:26.312-05:00UpDaTe!A few new happenings around the Hoff home!

- The picture above was taken at a stream in Allentown. The recreational therapist from Good Shepherd found some new equipment for Kyle to try to get back out fishing! It was a little chilly so we didn't get to fish long, but the main purpose was for Kyle to figure out what modifications would work well with his hands. Keep praying that Kyle's hands would be healed so that he could catch that striped bass he's been after!

- We were fortunate this past weekend to meet an amazing couple, Paul and Jen. Paul has been in a wheelchair for 11 years and was so encouraging to Kyle. It's always great for us to meet other couples who know exactly what we are going through. They gave us wisdom and inspiration. We appreciate their hospitality and are thankful for their open hearts! Thanks to Jim and Gina for introducing us.

- Now for the greatest news! Kyle was trying to get to something the other day and as he inched his wheelchair closer, he bumped his leg into the table and he felt it! This has been the first new sensation in a long time! Although we don't like to see Kyle in pain it was great, because that means that he is feeling more. Pray that God continues to work out the crossed wires in Kyle's body so that he can gain more feeling and strength.Kyle & Brittany Hoffhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15205899398333956069noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-760369417219170722.post-48050024384621087312008-11-12T18:32:00.002-05:002008-11-12T18:48:18.843-05:00TuRtLe! He is supposed to tilt his chair back every half hour for 5 minutes to take the pressure off of his bum. Last night Kyle was finishing up a shift and when he was ready to come back up, the chair wouldn't let him! He was stuck in this position for over an hour! We had to call a service technician to come fix it. Feeling a little panicked that he wouldn't be there for another hour, Britt decided that we would have to get him out somehow! Kyle's mom and stepdad came to the rescue. We got his sling on and used his electric lift to lift him out. The lift only went so far, so Mark picked Kyle up like a baby and lifted him the rest of the way. We were able to get Kyle into bed safely and wouldn't you know that the chair worked after we got him out! It was a little scary, but now we are able to giggle about how he looked like a turtle on his back! We are happy that Kyle is safe!Kyle & Brittany Hoffhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15205899398333956069noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-760369417219170722.post-37308098989462677962008-11-05T14:59:00.004-05:002008-11-05T15:19:22.419-05:00RaNdOm FuN PhOtOs!

Kyle & Brittany Hoffhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15205899398333956069noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-760369417219170722.post-63306214077496925722008-11-02T16:18:00.002-05:002008-11-12T18:49:16.236-05:00MoSeS UpDaTe

Currently Moses lives in our garden shed attached to our house, where he is fed and well cared for by all who come to visit :)
Kyle & Brittany Hoffhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15205899398333956069noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-760369417219170722.post-36440443480044243652008-11-01T21:27:00.004-04:002008-11-02T16:41:47.584-05:00PrAiSe!The crazy thing about spinal cord injuries is that you never know what movement or sensation will come back. The doctors can never tell you what the prognosis will be because they simply don't know. What we do know is the power of prayer and how God is the ultimate healer. As you know, Kyle gained movement in his left wrist 5 months ago and is working on strengthening it. After one year of his injury, his right wrist is trying to come alive! He is really trying to send the message from his brain to his wrist, and you can see some movement. Please pray that God will continue to awaken these new movements and strengthen Kyle's wrists.

Today I was fortunate enough to attend a caregivers pampering day sponsored by Calvary Church and Joni and Friends of Philadelphia. This day was all about giving ladies a chance to relax and take a break from the hectic schedules of taking care of family members with special needs. I was excited to join in the fun remembering what a great friend once told me. He reminded me of how when you board a plane, they tell you that in the event of an emergency that you are to put the oxygen mask on yourself before your child. As selfish as it might seem, and trust me I really struggle, you can't help others if you aren't taking care of yourself. I was thankful for the massages and pampering. I definitely feel refreshed and renewed!Kyle & Brittany Hoffhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15205899398333956069noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-760369417219170722.post-28232828747209622912008-10-28T20:15:00.005-04:002008-11-18T16:59:47.163-05:00Meg & Troy's Wedding
Kyle's sister Megan got married this past Saturday!
